Welcome to the Information Commons!

The Information Commons (IC) provides front-line support/help to students, faculty, and staff for several institutional services such as institutional email (UTORmail) and general Internet access (browsers, wireless, UTORid password changes, etc.).We also offer a number of other services including, software sales (Licensed Software Office), document and film scanning (Digital Studio), video editing (New Media Suites), event recording (Media Production) and distribution (Media Distribution). Use the tabs above for direct links to the various units within the IC. A brief description of each unit is given below.

About Our Services

Computer Access Facilities
IC staff support computer access facilities (CAF) sites in most central libraries on the St. George campus (Robarts, Victoria College, Gerstein, St. Michael's College). While the configuration in each location varies, all computers have Internet and email access, and access to laser printing (for a fee). All sites have computers configured with desktop software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). In addition, some computers in the Robarts CAF have colour laser printing, scanners, graphic and webpage design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver).

Help Desk
Our Help Desk is the primary support centre for the following service/products:

  • Browsers (installation documentation and configuration)
  • Email packages for UTORmail (installation documentation and configuration)
  • UTORWebmail (web interface to UTORmail)
  • Internet wireless access
  • Internet dial-in access
  • UTORid password changes
  • UTORweb (50MB of free webspace)
  • Mailing list software (LISTSERV)
  • UTORschedule
  • Computer Access Facilities (CAF) desktops
  • CAF printing

Digital Studio

  • Image scanning and editing (including fee-for-service)
  • OCR (optical character recognition)
  • Print design
  • Web design and support

Licensed Software Office

  • Sale of licensed software
  • CD/DVD volume duplication

Media Production

  • Event video recording
  • Live and post-event video streaming services
  • Video collection (duplication and sales)

NewMedia Suites

  • editing of audio and video material (free training provided)
  • booking and signing out of digital video and still cameras

Media Distribution
Since 1970, the Information Commons (formerly the Media Centre) has produced hundreds of video programs that have been sold across Canada, the United States, Africa and Australia. Five major series have been broadcast on Canadian television and our programs have received numerous accolades and awards. We are renowned for our Medieval Video Collection.
